Beautiful march and sound at Saint Patrick's Cathedral--August 11, 2011..I'll mail the Emerald Soc. a DVD-video of that day--tomorrow/87-minutes worth of footage/I was the guy in the light brown vest. Very beautiful ceremony-Hugh L. Carey is a exceptional man in politics. May God always bless such people.

I saw your performance at the 2008 9/11 Memorial Concert. Loved your rendition of 'Hard Times'. I have been a bagpiper for over two years and have been trying to figure out 'Hard Times' on the pipes. Being a new piper, sheet music really helps me learn a tune. Haven't mastered the art of listening to a tune and then playing it on the chanter. Does your band have sheet music for this tune, and if so, do you share it with other pipers/bands. Looking forward to seeing the band at the 2011 Memorial Concert. Stay safe! My dear Mr. H. Campbell of Dundee, Scotland pleae be advised that we here in America have developed a different culture and tradition when it comes to the Pipes. The NYPD Banmd is the foremost Police Pipe Band in our Country. They have been an integral part of Police Funerals in this Country and have led this tradition for the last 50 years. Your culture has not been hijacked...we just have a culture of our own! As a former Drum Major of a Police Pipe Band in New Jersey and in Florida as well, I can tell you the NYPD Pipe Band is filled with the most brotherly, fraternal, and caring members that I have ever met. They are, without a close second, THE BEST !!
March 5, 2011

Name: H Campbell
Location: Dundee, Scotland

Why has Scottish culture been hijacked, Highland pipes and drum bands are Scottish and nothing to do with Irish culture and cannot be claimed to be Irish. This is part of our (scottish) culture and traditions. I should know I am Scottish and from a long line of pipers going back 150 years.

From the webmaster:

Mr Campbell,

Here among the pages of our web site, we have given fine homage to our Scottish brothers and sisters, and your long heritage with this fine instrument and manner of dress.  Perhaps you should peruse our pages more thoroughly?  If not why don't you simply click here for a more clear, concise explanation of our viewpoint on this most important topic....

Cheers, NYPD P&D

I love your band and the respect given to Celtic society but is why is there no mention of Scotland in your history. You wear traditional Highland dress and play the scottish bagpipes .(not Irish) Alot of my family are from Ireland so this is not meant to offend anyone or their family history or background. I just thaught this would be a good place to ask these questions.

Webmaster's note: Adam, perhaps the page you refer to is the Emerald Society's actual page? The Pipe Band page does, in fact, mention Scotland and her history especially regarding the pipes. The Emerald Society proper is our overhead organization and good friends, however they do not take part in highland dress, they only wear our regular NYPD uniform. The great highland bagpipes are likewise only played by members of our sub-unit of the Emerald Society, that is the pipe band. Cheers to you and all your family. Ken

I was a good friend of Finbar Devine and I am proud to say the last time Finbar marched down the mountain at Hunter we marched side by side coming down the mountain. I am very proud to say I have been a member of the Emerald Society for my 37 year career with the Police Department. Their music is the best and the band members are great, always willing to play their beautiful and lively music at events. Sad to say they had to play twice for funerals in 6 months for my family. First, my son Patrick's funeral in June and then my father Bill McNeely's funeral in November. My father was one of the members of NYPD who went to the Police Commissioner to ask if the Irish members could march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1953. Watching one of the biggest and strongest organizations grow is like beautiful music in homage to my father and those other members of the Emerald Society who have gone home to heaven. Two of my greatest memories are the first time I marched up 5th, a rookie, behind the band in 1964 and the last time in 1985, when I and my two son's came home to New York to march up 5th the year I retired. A tear came to my eye watching the video of the history. Many memories of past St. Patrick Days. Marching with Jack Healy, and other friends and partners. Keep up the tradition, keep up the pride for you are the Finest. Jim Gerien

Congratulations on your 50th anniversary. Our memories of the band are wonderful ones; all good times with upstanding officers/band members and their families and friends. One particular memory is when our good friend, Dougie Connell, gathered some of the guys to play at our wedding - 25 years ago. It was a blast and people still talk about 'the pipe and drums.' Thank you for everything you do. May God bless you all.

I have always enjoyed the band and as a native New Yorker have seen you march in countless parades over the years. I enjoyed your new CD. The pipes & drums should consider recording a CD with the NYPD Brass band. You could produce some interesting combined music for band and pipes with an NYPD twist to it. The British military bands and pipes have been doing this for years and they made 'Amazing Grace' a world wide hit as a result. You guys have the in-house resources to do something similer. Consider it.

I want to thank you for sending a contingent to play at the Bronx VA on Presidents day. I was there to visit a friend, who has a great deal of difficulty communicating and it was great to see the effect that the pipes and drums had on him, as well as the other veterans. I My sister competed in Highland dancing, so growing up I attended quite a few Highland and Celtic competitions and have heard quite a few pipe bands in the US and the UK. I think that level of muscianship and comradre that you dsiplayed was exceptional. I know that your performance at the VA, had more impact on its audience, than any performance at the Edinburgh Tattoo. Again, thank you for giving up your time.

I came accross your guest book and was pleased to see a picture of my uncle, Ray McConville (the bass drummer pictured in the intro). Ray, along with Peirce Meagher and Finbar Devine was one of the principle founders of the band. Among the things that Ray was able to accomplish was to convince Mayor John V. Lindsay (a big fan of the band) to give the members time off 'on the arm' to travel to and play in Ireland. Ray has long since passed away but I am sure is smiling and proud at the success the band has had over the years. Good luck and congratulations to all members past and present on the 50th Anniversary. twheeler@courts.state.ny.us

Just wanted to comment on the terrific send off for Pipe Sergeant Tommy Brancella. Having enjoyed and played with Tom on numerous events myself over the past 30 years and having been a Pipe student of his 30 years ago, I know he would have been proud of the excellent job the band did for him at his funeral. He'll be missed not only by members of the NY City Police Pipe Band but also by the numerous civilian Pipers & Drummers who had the privilege of not only playing with him but who also enjoyed his good humor and pleasant nature. Tom was one in a million. Your tribute slide show of Tommy is superb. To see him & another legend of the Police Band, DM Finbar Devine, together, was too much for words. Tommy was, and will always be, one of NY's FINEST. We will miss him dearly. PO Bill Fitzgibbon - Port Authority Police of NY/NJ DM - Bergen Irish Pipe Band

Hi, I am a serving Detective Officer of 21 years service with Bedfordshire Police in England. This is one of the smallest Police Forces in the UK. Unlike Scotland very few of the English police forces have pipe bands. I am currently lead tip with a civilian pipe band locally. We take part in local and national charity events and have taken part in the recent 'pipefest' parades in Edinburgh and New York and Paris in aid of Marie Curie and Gilda's cancer care. During the Tartan Day celebrations in NYC 2002 I was amazed at the large number of Emergency Service bands that were on parade and the differing patches and insignia. I was honoured enough to be given a couple whilst there. This set me thinking and I would like to start a collection and gather together as many 'Police' Pipe band patches as possible from across the World. The object would be two-fold a) On a personal level, to continue to fuel my interest in Police memorabilia/pipe bands b) If this takes off I could auction/raffle the collection in the future in aid of a good cause. https://www.livegroup.co.uk/policememorial/SSL/index2.php i have gathered together, a list of Police Pipe Bands across the globe and was wondering if you would be interested in sending me 2 of your bands patches. (if you are interested I will forward my work place mailing address). I am able to trade my own forces patch if required. I do realise this may seem a little 'cheeky', for want of a better word, but I hope it raises peoples interest and hopefully lead to a worthwhile sum being raised. I would be delighted to hear from you and would welcome any thoughts or suggestions you may have. It has already been suggested that the August 2005 Edinburgh event may be a suitable target for completion and auction of the collection Yours Fraternally Crawford W. GILLAN

Hello - I am the daughter of Chief Dennis Ryan, RET NYPD and the wife of Sgt. Mike O'Loughlin of Cresskill PD. Mikey is also a member of the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County. On March 30, 2003, Cresskill, New Jersey Police Officer Michael O'Loughlin, age 36, had emergency surgery to remove an unknown blockage from his small intestine. During the surgical procedure, it was determined that the blockage was a tumor that had spread to his lymph nodes and many vital organs. The pathology reports indicate that Mikey has the most advanced stage of Colon Cancer. Mikey is scheduled to enter a new program of treatment that has been established in Boston and will be administered at Englewood Hospital, NJ. The cost for his medical treatment, some of which will be experimental will be astronomical. Additionally, together with family and many friends, Mikey and Mary are planning ahead to ensure that their two sons, Bryan and Terry, will have the financial means to continue their education in the future. Mikey recently underwent a 10 hour operation in DC and just returned home. There is a fundraiser tomorrow in Bergenfield NY - Please call 201-384-5757 or email pba180dance@aol.com or check out the website at www.members.cox.net/mikeyocancerfund for more information.

Everyone stood up, placed hats over their hearts, and cheered. Thanks to the Emerald Society I cried tears of American pride that day. We also toured Yosemite National Park (saw wine trees on the way), fished Shaver Lake (bigfoot sighting), and laughed as we sang Johnny Cash, (woof, woof). I Love You Guys!!!! Email me :-)

We were some of the very fortunate people from around the United States to be a part of the NYPD Bomb Squad's Centennial celebration. The sound of the bagpipes and drums at the beginning of the banquet were as big as TEXAS! It was a wonderful feeling to know that my husband and I were two of the hundreds of people that were able to hear you on this night. Congratulations on a job well done. It was wonderful!!

I have only seen the band once on St. Patrick's Day 1969. I left New York City for the wild west in December of that year and have not made it back to see them again. I was in Washington, D.C. for the St. Patrick's Day parade in 2000. Seeing the pipers reminded me of the great Emerald Socity Band of New York City. They are all still in my heart especially Det. Ed McPhillips who gave me a solo recital. Your web site is wonderful and I'm going to buy the 2003 CD.
